Corrections & right of reply

Draft — pending legal review

Getting this right matters more than getting it fast. If an entry on this site is wrong, out of date, or missing your side of the story, here is how to have it fixed.

Presumption of innocence: Charged and accused individuals are presumed innocent. This shows the status of public allegations and legal processes, not guilt. Data reflects publicly reported cases as of the stated date and is not exhaustive.

Who can ask for a correction

Anyone: a named individual, a political party or its representative, a legal representative, a journalist, or any reader who spots an error. You do not need to explain who you are to have a factual error corrected.

How to submit one

Email corrections@scamsa.org or use the flag-a-case form. Please include:

  • the party and the person's name as it appears on the site;
  • exactly which detail is disputed (status, date, description, source);
  • what the correct position is;
  • a link to a source we can check — a court roll, judgment, NPA or commission statement, official media release or credible published report.

A checkable source is the one hard requirement. We cannot act on an assertion alone, however credible it sounds.

Right of reply

Any individual or party named here may supply a statement in response to an entry. If you do, it is published directly beneath that case, clearly labelled "Party's response", with a link to the full statement where one exists. We do not edit the substance of a response, and we do not require you to accept our framing of the matter in order to publish it.

Status changes and resolved matters

If a matter's procedural status has moved on — charges withdrawn, an acquittal, a conviction, an adverse finding set aside — tell us and we will record the change on the case's timeline. Matters that resolve in a person's favour are marked resolved, stay visible for the record, and stop contributing any points to a party's score.

What happens next

Using this process first is genuinely the fastest way to resolve a dispute — most corrections are settled here in weeks, not the months litigation takes. That said, it is an invitation, not a prerequisite: nothing on this page prevents you from pursuing any other remedy available to you, at any time.

A person reads every request. We aim to acknowledge within 5 working days and to resolve within 30 days. If we agree an entry is wrong we correct or remove it and update the case's "last verified" date and timeline so the change is visible rather than silent. If we disagree, we say so and why, and your response can still be published alongside the entry.

If you are named in a case, the quickest way to have your side shown is the "Named in this case? Give your side" button on that case — responses go straight to an editor for verification.

Removal requests

We will remove an entry where it is factually wrong, unsourced, or where publication is no longer lawful or fair. We will generally decline to remove an accurately described, well-sourced public matter simply because it is unflattering — but you always retain the right of reply above. Requests about your own personal information submitted through this site are covered by the privacy policy.
